A Message From the President: Ed Mulkearnlake shore

My family and I enjoy winter and all the activities that go along with it.  That being said,  I am glad to see grass, my driveway and water in the lake.  By my count we went 41 days in January and February without climbing above freezing.  Now it is springtime.  The ice is out and the gate is in.  Time to prepare for summer.

We are going to focus on the usual items this year and a couple of new projects.  Safety and weed harvesting will be our main concerns as always.  The safety buoys will be placed in the lake the middle of May.  Remember to follow the counter-clockwise rule when boating.  Also remember that a non-motorized vessel such as a row boat or sail boat has the right of way.  We are moving forward with the installation of two web cams which will be viewed from our web site.  We are also going to install additional lighting at our property downtown.

I would like to remind everyone that when we begin the harvesting operations this year we will be following the same guidelines we established when we began 4 years ago.  We will focus our efforts on the unrestricted navigable area of the lake first (100 feet from shore).  Then we will begin mowing inside 100 feet on an as needed basis,  usually by July 1st.  The vegetation in the lake grows the same as the vegetation on dry ground.  Species come up at different times.  Growth rates are different with each species.  There are times when harvesting tends to become rather spotty and it can be very challenging keeping up.  We are very fortunate that our operators and supervisor are dedicated and conscientious.  Due to a conveyor mat failure on the harvester last summer we had a week of down time while we were in the middle of a battle with a very prolific bloom of pusillus in the south end of the lake.  This limited our ability to get into some areas as quickly as we have in the past

Last but certainly not least.  Our good friend Halcyon Mueller will be celebrating her 90th birthday April 22, 2010.  We have all been invited to an open house in her honor Sunday, April 18, 2010 from 2-5 PM at the Mina-Findley Lake Community Center.  At 3 PM there will be a program thanking her for her service to the community.  Halcyon has been the scribe, photographer and editor of the Tapestry newsletter since it's beginning September of 1998.  She is also a supporter of our efforts as stewards of the lake and watershed, regularly attends our annual meetings and helps us to communicate with the community via the Tapestry.

She has requested that there be no gifts.  Normally, I would honor the wishes of a friend for whom I have the greatest respect and who has given so much to our community.  However, this time I will be supporting the efforts of Larry Rater and the Sherman School students who are going to build a new picket fence and make some needed repairs to her home buy giving her a monetary gift and encourage you to join me. If you are unable to attend you may send your gift to Halcyon Mueller, P.O. Box 34 Findley Lake, NY 14736.

Respectfully,

TreeNOTE: Please try to keep all leaves from the lake shoreline, and do not burn the leaves, as nutrients will be released into the lake, and this will further fuel the weed growth.

2010 FLWF Membership Drive Update

If you are not already a member of the FLWF there is still time to join for 2010. We have a beautiful lake and it is maintained by our membership and by the many volunteers who donate their time on week days and weekends. Also there are many in our membership who donated extra money and we thank them for doing so. We own and maintain Litz Gazebo and the park it sits on and also maintain the docks at the northwest end of the lake for your enjoyment. To get an application see any board member or call Dave Calvert 769-2270.
